Welcome to the UK branch-site of the International RyuKyu Karate Research Society – Ryukyu Karate Jutsu Kyokukai Kenkyu Kai.

The Society was formed in 1989 by Patrick McCarthy to meet the numerous and varying demands of the progressive learner, and acts as an international information based network of like-minded martial artists and historians dedicated to studying the origins, evolution and tactical application of classical karate and kobudo.

In the UK society members come from a wide range of styles, grades and political affiliations and use the materials and training methods advocated by the Society to add a new dimension to their training.

Members also host courses with Hanshi McCarthy and his accredited Koryu Uchinadi instructors, and meet at study groups across the country to train informally at sessions arranged by non-accredited study group leaders.

Please note this site is under construction and so the information we have here is brief and to the point. If you want to read more about Hanshi McCarthy, the IRKRS or Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu then please see McCarthy Hanshi’s international website, listed on the Links page.

Latest News: Kata Application courses with Hanshi McCarthy in the United Kingdom in June 2010 – full details on the Courses page.

Coming Soon: Interview with Hanshi McCarthy conducted in November 2009 to be published in martial arts press.
