About the Founder of the IRKRS Hanshi Patrick McCarthy, 8^th dan, started his martial arts training in the 60s and forged his identity of reputation on the tournament floor in kata, kumite and kobudo during the 70s, amassing over 300 victories, 5 national awards and a world title. He relocated to Japan in the 80s where he became one of the generation of foreign shoot fighters in the UFWI and became increasingly recognised for his field research and writings on classical karate, and for his book ‘The Bubishi’ – which has recently been reprinted as ‘Bubishi – The Classical Manual of Combat’. In the 90s his successful seminars on the history, theory and application of karate saw him become one of the most sought after master level instructors anywhere in the world, with the likes of Terry O’Neil, Harry Cook, Paul Perry and Vince Morris seeking him out. He also established the world’s first undergraduate diploma in martial arts instruction at the Australian College of Natural Medicine in Brisbane, Australia where he resides with his wife and two children. A 5^th generation master level instructor of uchinadi (Okinawan Hand) following Kinjo Hiroshi, Hanashiro Chomo, Itsou Ankoh and Matsumura Sokon he has walked in the footsteps of these masters and aimed to seek what they sought, receiving his credentials from the Dai Nippon Butokukai as they were bestowed upon Funakoshi Gichin, Miyagi Chojun, Mabuni Kenwa, Ohtsuka Hironori, Konishi Yasuhiro, Sakagami Ryusho and Nagamine Shoshin.  A recognised seminar trailblazer in the application practices of traditional kata McCarthy Sensei has been invited to teach his theories in over 20 countries worldwide.
