About the International Ryukyu
Karate Research Society
The Ryukyu Karate Jutsu Kyokukai Kenkyukai (International
Ryukyu Karate Research Society) is an information based world-wide
organization dedicated to studying, the origins, evolution & tactical
application theories of traditional karate & Okinawan kobudo. Originally
founded in Japan in 1989 by Patrick McCarthy to serve the numerous and varying
demands of a more progressive learner.
Membership allows access
to the ‘Karate Study List’ which is a friendly and respectful bulletin
board-style forum discussing the classical empty-handed combative practices
of Okinawa. There is also access to the KSL archives going back to 1998 and
to the members’ only website where there is a VAST array of research
material, lecture transcripts, photo archives, research articles and academic
papers – and the opportunity to use this copyright protected information in
your research. Each year the member receives four quarterly journals around
70 pages in length filled with new research material, articles, interviews
and news of training opportunities.
In addition to the above
there is the opportunity to gain official dan or title recognition, gain a
genealogical pedigree dating back to the early Okinawan pioneers, and access
master level instruction and guidance from Patrick McCarthy and his
accredited Koryu Uchinadi instructors. Membership is not
compulsory to attend a seminar or a study group on a casual basis, however,
after even a brief exposure to the material on offer, you will be asking how
you can keep going without it.
